BSIS Exposed Firearm Permit Qualification Overview
This 2.5-hour qualification is required by the California Bureau of Security & Investigative Services (BSIS) to renew an Exposed Firearms Permit.
Qualification Frequency

Must be completed twice each year of the 2-year permit (4 qualifications total)

Qualifications must be at least 4 months apart and ideally no more than 6 months apart

Note: Rented firearms require ammunition purchased from Basic Firearms Training or factory new, brass-cased ammo from the range. 50 rounds per caliber are required for qualification; 100 rounds if practicing before qualification.

A BSIS Exposed Firearms Permit does not allow concealed carry. Officers must have both a valid exposed firearms permit and a valid CCW to carry concealed.
