Frequently Asked Questions

How often must I renew my CCW?

California law requires that standard CCW permits for the residents and nonresidents be renewed every 2 years. Judicial permits must be renewed every 3 years. Reserve peace officer permits must be renewed every 4 years.

Is live-fire qualification required?

Yes. A shooting qualification is part of the renewal process.

Do I bring the firearms on my permit?

Yes. Bring each firearm you intend to renew on your permit.

Can I retake the course if I fail the qualification?

Please refer to our registration terms and conditions for policies regarding failed courses and qualifications. During the CCW course, we will attempt to allow you more than one opportunity to complete the course of fire on the same day.

If for whatever reason (time constraints, lack of ammunition, firearm failures, etc.), you are unable to qualify on the same day, you will be allowed to attend the qualification portion of a future CCW course. You will be responsible for paying the range fees for any subsequent dates you come to qualify.
The primary reason people are unable to qualify is that their firearm(s) are not in good working order and they cannot complete the qualification. If you are concerned about the course of fire, please email registration@basicfirearmstraining.net and request a copy of the course of fire so you can practice before your course.

Are refresher courses mandatory?

Yes, completing refresher training ensures your CCW remains valid under California law.

What happens when I renew my permit before the permit expires?

The new permit expiration date is 2 years from the date the issuing agency finished processing your renewal application. The expiration date is not extended by 2 years from the current expiration date.

For example, if you apply 60 days before the expiration date and it takes the agency 10 days to process the application, you will lose 50 days on your current permit.
