Eligibility Requirements

To carry concealed under H.R. 218, officers must:

  • Qualify annually with the type of firearm they will carry (handgun, shotgun, or rifle).

  • Note that federal law does not differentiate between semi-automatic and revolver handguns.

  • Carry a valid agency-issued photo identification.

  • Carry a current qualification card showing the qualification was completed within the past 12 months.

  • Basic Firearms Training only qualifies officers with handguns.

Qualification Process

Officers may complete the qualification using one of the following:

  • Their agency course of fire, if available, or

  • A 36-round California POST course of fire

Upon successful completion, officers receive a qualification card, which must be carried alongside their agency-issued ID while carrying a firearm.
